  • There is an important limitation in studies on human immune responses where sampling is mainly confined to peripheral blood. However, adaptive immune reactions carry out their effects in diverse tissues.

  • Memory cells remain in a range of tissues, such as infection sites and lymphoid organs.

  • Virus-specific memory CD4+ and CD8+ T cells include heterogeneous subsets of circulating subsets and non-circulating tissue-resident memory cells in different organs.

  • The present study revealed the cellular complexity and functional diversity of SARS-CoV-2-specific memory T and B cells in lymphoid and mucosal tissues of previously infected organ donors up to 6 months after infection.
