Red meat intake and rheumatoid arthritis

  • Eating less red meat could be recommended to patients with a high risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

  • ︎Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease that presents with chronic symmetric arthritis. This disease afflicts millions worldwide and causes progressive joint deformity. Both genetic and environmental agents are considered as triggers of the disease.

  • ︎Several studies proved role of dietary factors in rheumatoid arthritis development. In this study, Jin and colleagues explored a large cohort of participants and investigated the association between red meat intake and the onset age of rheumatoid arthritis.

  • ︎Based on this investigation, higher red meat intake leads to higher BMI and early onset of the disease compared with a low red meat intake. By adjustment for demographic and other confounders, it is showed that in the high-intake patients, the disease started 6.46 years earlier than the other group.
