Guillain-Barré syndrome is a serious health problem that leads to muscle weakness or paralysis and other associated symptoms.
Guillain-Barré syndrome can occur at any age. It is most common in people between ages 30 and 50.
The exact cause of Guillain-Barré syndrome is unknown but it is thought to be caused when the body's defense (immune) system mistakenly attacks part of the peripheral nervous system.
Guillain-Barré syndrome may follow certain bacterial or viral infections.
Guillain-Barré syndrome may also occur with other medical conditions, such as:
Systemic lupus erythematosus
Hodgkin disease
After surgery
Symptoms usually arise due to damaged parts of nerves and cause tingling, muscle weakness, loss of balance, and paralysis.
