Compared with non-drinkers, the pathologic activity of Rheumatoid Arthritis in alcohol-drinkers was significantly reduced. Moreover, alcohol drinkers reported better health-related functional ability.
︎Interestingly, in these patients, blood inflammatory biomarkers were not associated with alcohol consumption.
︎In contrast, smoking has been linked to worse outcomes in more aggressive diseases in people with rheumatoid arthritis. However, there was no association between alcohol consumption and smoking, sex, or antibody status.
In short, alcohol consumption in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is associated with better disease activity scores.
