Does morning Blood pressure elevation affect chronic kidney disease progression?

  • Chronic kidney disease is a major public health issue with an 8–16% prevalence worldwide. Hypertension is an important risk factor and a complication of chronic kidney disease and is very common in chronic kidney disease patients.

  • Blood pressure usually rises from being asleep to awake, which is named the morning blood pressure surge. Researchers have reported that elevated morning blood pressure surge was related to cardiovascular events and chronic kidney disease in hypertensive patients.

  • Poor control of hypertension in general increases the risk of development and progression of kidney disease, resulting in end-stage renal disease, cardiovascular events, and even mortality.

  • Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is automatic and non-invasive instrumentation which is an important method of blood pressure assessment. The Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring can provide not only the blood pressure data throughout the day but also the blood pressure variability and blood pressure circadian pattern which is generally characterized by a fall during sleep and a surge in the morning.

  • Appropriate evaluation and management of morning blood pressure surge may be helpful to postpone chronic kidney disease progression.
