Causes of smoking relapse after smoking cessation treatment

  • ︎Despite smoking cessation methods being developed, smoking relapse remains frequent. Cigarette dependence and positive or negative affect are the most important reasons to relapse; however, there is little evidence on the characteristics that lead to relapse among individuals.

  • Rodríguez-Cano and colleagues tried to discover the most common risk factors of relapse after smoking cessation. They recruited 121 smokers who quit smoking and relapsed during a one-year period.

  • ︎They reported that the most common relapse situations happened when participants faced positive (for example being relaxed) or negative (for example being angry) affect or cigarette dependence–associated situations (for example craving).

  • ︎According to their findings, males with higher levels of education and no use of psychological drugs are in danger of relapsing in positive-affect situations. Also, starting smoking at an older age increased the chance of relapse in negative-affect situations. Younger patients with little motivation are more prone to relapse in cigarette dependence-related situations.
