Can pregnant women benefit from COVID-19 vaccination?

  • Millions of people have been infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus in which many have died from COVID-19 and related complications. Vaccines are currently the leading approach for combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Due to the immune system alterations during pregnancy, pregnant women are at risk for severe COVID-19 infection and potentially at risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes.

  • Phase 3 vaccine clinical trials conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of messenger RNA COVID-19 vaccines did not include pregnant women, given the current lack of evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of the vaccines for this population, some vaccination guidelines for pregnant women contraindicate the vaccine whereas some recommend the vaccine.

  • The BioNTech 162b2 messenger RNA vaccine was estimated to have high vaccine effectiveness in pregnant women, which is similar to the effects estimated in the general population. Some studies suggest that the vaccination of pregnant women may also provide protection for their newborns.

  • Further studies are needed to better understand the effectiveness of the vaccine in pregnant women including the timing of vaccine administration and pregnancy- and non-pregnancy-related safety outcomes.
